Thank you so much my friend! I'm on a pentium 4 myself with only 1GB of ram so, yes! you can easily try it out. Linux is fun! after a while, when you get use to it, you'll love it.

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 - the latest stable one. I switched not so long ago.. I started with ubuntu beacues I was told it's a good distro for beginners. you can look here to get the idea of how to do it.. [link]
I recommend you to ask more people, for more opinions and then you'll have a better picture.. I'll gladly be ready to answer any question in case you need more help.
